(1896-1974): A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Sample studied with Stanton Macdonald Wright and Frank Tolles Chamberlin, and spent six months at Otis Art Institute. He taught architectural drawing and painting for ten years (1928-1938) at the University of Southern California. Primarily a landscape painter, he first got interested in doing frescoes in 1932 when he joined a small goup of young painters assisting Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros in the execution of his mural, Workers' Meeting, in the sculpture court at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. In 1938 Sample moved to New England. He spent 20 years as artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. In 1942 he won the 48-State Competition to do a mural for the Apponaug, Rhode Island, post office.
