A Laguna Beach-based artist, Bartels creates murals and furniture from broken tiles. His work is found in restaurants, hotels, museums, and homes throughout the United States and abroad. Bartels, who received his M.F.A. from California State University, Fullerton, has operated his own ceramics studio since 1977. (Robin K.
