Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) Tour
Arts District in Downtown LA

On Saturday, February 23rd 2013, MCLA hosted a mural tour to the Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM), of the Arts District in Downtown LA. The tour started off with unexpected special guest, Jim Morphesis, an artist and the model for Kent Twitchell’s iconic 1984 “Jim Morhphesis Monument” mural, which MCLA restored in late 2011. Daniel Lahoda, curator of the Arts District, and owner of LALA Gallery, later joined us. Daniel spoke about the newest addition to the Arts District, a second mural from the series, Beautifully Destroyed, by street artist RISK .
Going to the Olympics Freeway Workshop
February 14th 2013
In honor of Valentines Day, MCLA decided to show some mural love and host a Freeway Workshop for Frank Romero’s Going to the Olympics, a 1984 Olympic Freeway Mural. Artists, art students, and art advocates from Otis College of Art and Design were invited to observe as MCLA’s commissioned restorer Willie Herrón III worked his restoration magic. Herrón and MCLA’s Executive Director, Isabel Rojas-Williams, spoke about the importance of restoring LA’s historic murals, and the technical process involved in bringing these works back. Also in attendance was street artist RISK, and Frank Romero’s daughter, Sonia Romero.

March 1st 2013 Recently, MCLA’s Executive Director, Isabel Rojas-Williams, was interviewed by the Los Angeles Times about MCLA’s 1984 Olympic Freeway Mural restorations. Artist of the Month: RISK
"In a career spanning 30 years, RISK has impacted the evolution of graffiti as an art form in Los Angeles and worldwide. RISK gained major notoriety for his unique style and pushed the limits of graffiti further than any writer in L.A. had before: He was one of the first writers in Southern California to paint freight trains, and he pioneered writing on “heavens,” or freeway overpasses. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third rail series of art shows, and later parlayed the name into the first authentic line of graffiti inspired clothing..." América Tropical
Interpretive Center (ATIC)

Early in February, MCLA’s Executive Director Isabel Rojas-Williams, lectured at the América Tropical Interpretive Center (ATIC), for graduate students from CSULA, as well as students from Pomona College Museum of Art. Both lectures discussed David Alfaro Siqueiros’ life and legacy as a muralist. Special guest Chris Espinosa, El Pueblo’s Manager, spoke at both lectures about the City of Los Angeles and The Getty Conservation Institute’s (GCI) involvement in this project’s fruition. What a treat for these young and eager students!
Meeting Levi Ponce February 20th 2013 MCLA had the pleasure of interviewing muralist Levi Ponce, who over the last year has been involved in the creation of over 10 murals in the San Fernando Valley.
