Description / Interpretation:

Painted to decry gang violence, the Wilhall mural at the Wilmington Recreation Center has been a symbol of peace in the Wilmington community for the past 28 years. In 1996 I was asked to restore (repaint) the mural by a community-based group where I was assisted by volunteers ranging in age from 7 to 44 years old. A dedication ceremony was held upon its completion with the community and local government representatives in attendance, as well as a live broadcast on Channel 2 CBS news. I met several youths who had their bodies tattooed with an image of my mural. In September of 2004 I repainted the bottom 20 feet of the mural as it had been damaged by graffiti and soccer players bouncing their balls off the mural. Information and Photo courtesy of Joe Bravo.
