Description / Interpretation:

This mural is a symbol of freedom for womyn everywhere, a tribute to Assata Shakur's struggle and all that she stood for. Painted with an all womyn crew, we started on January 1st of 2013 marking the beginning of our efforts in empowering womyn in the community through public art. The flowers are corn lilys, originated in South Africa, the red symbolizing revolution, while the yellow symbolizes the sun/ a new day. This is the first of my own design. The mural was painted on a barbershop that has been operating for more than 50yrs in the same location, owned by an African American family now on it's third generation. The fact that it was painted by a group of chicana womyn shows the unity between black and brown, the history of Pacoima, and the many changes it's gone through.
