Hertel (1930-1993) was born in Evanston, Illinois, receiving her BA in art from Scripps College in 1952. She also studied at the Kann Art Institute in Los Angeles. For almost 30 years she worked closely with Millard Sheets and Denis O'Connor in designing murals and stained glass windows for Home Savings of America branches all over California. She began as a mural assistant, later did more of the designing, and eventually became virtually Sheets' partner. She also did murals in Dallas, Texas, and in El Dorado, Arkansas. Hertel's paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and small-group shows throughout southern California, as well as in New Mexico and Colorado. Around 1981, Hertel moved to Cerrillos, New Mexico, to concentrate on painting works on canvas. (Robin K. Dunitz, Street Gallery, Guide to over 1000 Los Angeles Murals)
