Originally from Dalian, China, Zhang graduated from the Central Institute of Art and Design in Beijing. He lived in Los Angeles from 1988-1993, then returned to China. In China he is known as a master lacquer painter. One of his large tapestries hangs at the Lausanne, Switzerland, headquarters of the International Olympics Committee. Although his Chinatown mural is his only mural in America, Zhang has done a dozen murals in China, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
