He was born and raised in a rural part of the northern California Bar Area. He studied painting for a semester at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, but primarely credits his father, a sign painter with whom he worked, with teaching him the basics. Gutierrez has lived in the Los Angeles are for the past 20 years, and has participated in numerous group shows with his paintings. He currently resides in San Pedro.
